The 2018 Inter Clubs.
at Royal Perth Yacht Club.
Once again the season for fun and games rolls around and the clubs begin to look over their shoulders at whom may be available to sail for their team on the weekend. Last year we had a bumper year and this year promises to be interesting with the introduction of Jervois Bay into the game. Known for their wonderful beach front onto the water and the fact that they advertise themselves as principally as a shallow draft dinghy club with a leavening of twin hull boats. However I think that one of their members has links with a bloke who owns a Foundation 36. It may be an interesting team. Koombana Bay has a team coming up and they did a great job last year as well.
Then the usual teams (SoPYC, RPYC, FSC, EFYC and RFBYC) to be seen with a certain amount of interest to see how Freshie come up. They have some great young sailors coming through. The weather looks interesting and should provide us with reasonable sailing.
Please remember that the images take time to put up so please be patient.

Sunday the 15th Open Season.
The ladies had a great morning on Saturday and even with the light breezes put in a solid performance. Royal Perth put in a consistent effort and despite the two bullets from Royal Freshwater Bay managed to take the day. This left Royal Perth with the Sunday racing to negotiate and even with the excellent performance put in by both South of Perth and Royal Freshwater Bay yacht clubs, Royal Perth managed to take the day away.
However the day wasn’t without it’s twists and turns and the morning session (limited to one race by light winds) was notable by a great performance by “wind whisperer” Nick Jerwood of South of Perth YC who on the final down wind sent helm Alex Landwehr on the opposite side of the course to the two Royal boats who had gone out on the river side looking for the remnants of a gust going down the right hand side. It died and a soft breeze drifted down on the other side next to Mounts Bay Road. This was enough to get South of Perth scooting along down to the line and it looked for a moment that the two “country” boats were going to take advantage of it as well. However enough breeze lingered on the right hand side and the Foundation 36 from Royal Perth edged over the line in second place. A true “Jesus” moment was the claim from the young sailors, but in my mind more a Lazarus moment. If ever there was a time for coming back from the dead, this was it.
The second moment occurred in the second race of the afternoon session that had been curtailed by lack of breeze and Conor Nicholas who was driving the South of Perth Foundation decided to take the four boats above him up into the start boat. We’d chosen to sit at the pin end and the view and shouting was enough to tell us that he’d succeeded. However his main opponents were the two Royals and they were free to start further down the line and by the time the others had sorted themselves out, the Royals were away and only good helming put South of Perth back into second spot.
Great light wind sailing for the day and despite the lack of breeze for part of it, a worthy win to Royal Perth Yacht club, with South of Perth and Royal Freshwater Bay sharing the same numbers, but on countback Freshie got the nod and took second. In fourth place, Fremantle Sailing Club had had an average weekend and it was consistency on the water that made the difference. Not for lack of effort though. Well sailed to Jervois Bay who took the country club trophy home with them. For every one else.. there's always next year.
Many thanks to Swan River Sailing with Andy, Georgia and Mike putting together a great show on the water. Andy was doing the media thing with live streaming via FB as well. Great work, but I can't help feel that Mike was using those long days on the water with me in previous years to Andy's advantage. You win some.....
However my thanks to Royal Perth for the event and the organisation. To Paul Harry past Commodore at Jervois Bay YC my thanks as well. He'd managed to borrow a rib for the day and we spent it on the company of Richard G. well known member at RP and mentor to the Sunday open racing fleet. Well done to Haydon the Sailing Administrator at RP who took control of the racing over the weekend.
And above all.. my thanks to the sailors, many and varied who took to the water over the weekend.

Friday the 13th Veterans Day.
A wonderful afternoon with enough breeze out of the sou west to make it perfect for the first round of the 2018 Interclubs at Royal Perth Yacht Club. Only six boats out on the water for the veterans with EFYC missing in action, but we’re sure that they will be back in action on the weekend.
A couple of unforced errors made it hard for SoPYC to get into the lead, but in the same breath RFBYC gave their fellow royals the lead despite similar scores as Royal Perth had taken two wins out of the three races. Fremantle must have been cursing the sweet kiss of the starting pin as they took off over the line in the second race, but no more than SoPYC when they OCS’d in the third race.
What was of interest to me was the battle between two former flying 15 world champions namely Grant Alderson (RFBYC) and Nick Jerwood (SoPYC) and despite having Commodore Dean on the main of the Freshie boat they still couldn't get past the Royal Perth entrants. I do believe that Jervoise Bay Yacht club had rung the changes and grabbed former commodore Paul Harry (who currently drives a Foundation 36 at South of Perth Yacht Club) as the helm for their boat. With the smiling face of Polly on trim, the club that claims to be a shallow draft bunch of dinghy sailors has some serious effort going for them.
However, having been given a ride with Alex Landwehr (who was projecting Mikael) from SoPYC, I was able to follow the fleet with an excellent commentary; most of which I cannot repeat, but it was enough to learn that some of the skippers weren't counting in the breeze that was flicking to the left up the course.
At the end of the afternoon, as the sun began to drop behind the ridge on which the club is situated, the last of the sun hi-lighted the sails and spinnakers giving me some glorious last minute images.
For the record.
