July the 31st
A quiet shine about the place.
Rolling back to the club on a cool and bright morning, I was looking forward to the next stage of Nereid's development.
The first layer of varnish has been laid on and what a difference it's made. A warm honeyed look has been given to the timber and the result is pleasing to the eye. The under water part of the hull has also been finished with two coats of antifoul put on. There are still a number of coats of vanish to go on and they should be done in the next week or so.
I noticed that the timber above the rubbing strake hadn't been started and Leon mentioned that with this older timber, they were waiting for a spell of warm weather as the recent wet weather had created a lot of moisture build up in the old timber and the varnish wouldn't have taken.
It's a pleasure to see and record the changes in the boat, but now the interior and topsides need to be finished. Certainly the interior of the hull has been given a good treatment with Everdure and I presume that the fittings have been kept, ready to put back into the hull. The same must be said for the engine and the steering gear as there's still a lot to be done. But she's almost ready to go into the water and I look forward to the next stage. I'm hoping that I'll be given a tip off so that I can record the movement of the hull out of the shed and into the river.

July the 17th.
Winter time in the shed.
Its been eight long weeks since I had a chance to pop my head into the shed and David was true to his word. She's still there. The hull is complete and talking to Leon who was busy at work on another boat, I learnt that Nereid is now waiting for David and his brother to varnish the timber above the water line.
Leon had spent the last few weeks tidying up and glassing below the waterline and he has done a good job. The scraggy timber has been cleaned up and the keel and hull now look smart. Even to putting the (brass?) fitting back onto the outflow point in the starboard hull below the water line. The antifoul will be put on before she goes back in and will complete the work on the hull.
The mast has also been given a little care and some work on the foot is clear. As I don't know her with the mast up, I'll look forward to seeing this piece of timber in place
As to the top decks and the interior, I've no information but I would presume that once the boat is back on the water and in the shed, the restoration will proceed apace. Speaking to a member of good standing who happened to wander in, he remembered her work as the clubs start boat during earlier years and that she was known as a good place to be for the start team and her skipper. An excellent spot to have a refreshing beverage after the work was done.
I'll be away for another week and then return to see where and what she's up to.
