The 2018 WA Secondary Schools Teams Racing
at Nedlands Yacht Club.
April 16th to the 18th.
Once again we will expect to see some of the best sailors that the schools have at hand and I'm sure that the team from RFBYC will have the race management in hand. They did a great job last year and they'll do it again. Nedlands YC still has those wonderful lawns and a generous beach launching area.
As to which school will get up... in my mind nothing will beat that rip roaring battle we had in 2013, when it was cold, wet and miserable and the wind blew itself into a frenzy. The sailing was fantastic. I have one or two teams I'd support, but until they show their hand, I'm saying naught.
Please remember that it takes time to get images processed so they will appear late at night. Please be patient.

My apologies for the lateness of this post, I've had some interruptions.
The day was wonderful with a nice little west sou westerly breeze ruffling the water down at the Nedlands Yacht club and the sailing was already well underway when I arrived from a prior engagement. As lunch was about to be called, I waited till the break was taken and was offered the chance to join an umpire once they were back on the water. Well that was a little later than expected as there was a protest in the mix as well. That stretched the lunch break out a bit, but soon enough we were on the water chasing the young sailors around the course. My umpire reckons he's got them all bluffed and surprise, surprise, he didn't need to lift his whistle to his lips as they would go into 360's at the drop of a hat, or the flick of a protest flag.
I was still barracking for Esperance, but I guess it wasn't going to be their year, this year. Scotch Gold and Christchurch Gold were locked into battle for the top of the tree, but the minors were where the action was and Shenton Green was pushing hard to get to past Shenton Blue with the same action happening in the middle league of the Scotch Maroon and Blue teams. However it was up to the John Tonkin, John XXIII and St Marks teams to keep these middle rank teams honest and there were some feisty battles. However at the end of the day and 145 flights they were ready to run the preliminary finals and then the minor and grand finals on the Wednesday.
As I was committed to sail on Wednesday I declined the kind offer of another day with the school teams.
Congratulations to Scotch Gold who took the event from Christchurch Gold and then to the minor champions Scotch Maroon over Shenton Blue.
Many thanks to the volunteers, umpires, the RFBYC start team and sailors who combined to make a wonderful regatta (again) and to Nedlands Yacht club and their people who ran the regatta so well.
Enjoy the images.

A quiet day from my understanding as I arrived very late in the day. Just enough time to capture a few images and secure a ride for tomorrow with the organisers. I had the opportunity to have a chat to a few people and they were a little distressed at the lack of schools attending this year. However Scotch College have managed to get three teams up with Christchurch Grammar and Shenton Park fielding two each. John XXII, St Marks, John Tonkin and Esperance made up the numbers.
I'll be following Esperance for I've a soft spot for this country team, having been attracted to their sailing style a few years ago. The main battle appears to be between Scotch Gold and Christchurch Gold, but I'm happy to report that Shenton Blue has put in a bid to be well regarded.
At present, they have managed to get through 6o flights in the Swiss system and it was only the lack of breeze that brought the racing to a halt. Well done the race management team and the plethora of umpires I saw on the water.
I'll be back on the water tomorrow. Enjoy the images.
