The Seventy Sixth
Sailing Opening Day
SoPYC 2021
The day began with scudding clouds and scudding breezes and everyone was wearing woolies just in case. But the club was looking at its best as everyone began to assemble at the club to get to work on their boats.
The management team was also lining up to get ready for the big day and the Promenade Marquee had been chosen with the room set up on the sunny side of the marquee. Great for the backdrop but it was going to be a bit warm if the breeze dropped out. The cannon was there, the piper was there, the distinguished visitors were there and even the flags rocked up with Commodore Michael Cook possibly a little nervous as he greeted people in the foyer below the Wardroom.
He did well and allowed the assembled guests to precede him into the Marquee where he made his entrance accompanied by a piper from Fremantle sailing club. He introduced Mr Colbung? who was to do the traditional "welcome to country". The Welcoming ceremony was soon dispensed with and the Opening Day ceremony got under way.
The Guest speaker was none other than PC and Life member Rupert Leslie who presented the new management team with their flags and then spoke eloquently about the future of the club. At the cessation of his speech, the club burgee was broken out by R/C Troy Dalglish and Starter John Rooke let fire with a club shotgun.
Shortly after the guests took to the water and the management team took their place on the start jetty to take the sail past of the various fleets both power, keelboat and off the beach. Due to the inability of my skipper to arrive in time I wasn't able to get onto the water till after the event had finished. A pity.
However we had a rollicking good time out on the water and had a lot of fun chasing Mariner's transom all the way around the track and for once Corella didn't catch up. Swiftsure Saga had sailed well.
The first lot of photos are the ceremony, the next lot are from the day on the water.
